Tell Mayor Greg Fischer to Defy Trump, Defend Louisville, & Expand Sanctuary
Donald Trump just announced executive action that threatens any city that seeks to protect immigrant residents from his deportation machine. What he’s trying to do is roll back the leaps forward we’ve made in recent years but we won’t let him. In 2017, it’s the efforts to defend Black lives and protect migrant rights that make our cities safer, not Trump’s extra enforcement promises. To keep us safe, we need to evolve our local policies to make our cities real sanctuaries for all residents, not cancel them because of the illegitimate President's latest actions. That means a commitment to separating police from federal immigration enforcement AND addressing the policing that funnels Black and other residents to jail and places criminal charges on immigrant residents, making them a target for ICE agents. Tell our mayor and city council to stand up to Trump and take action that doesn't just symbolically defend immigrants, but transforms our city's policies to stop targeting us for imprisonment, risk of removal, and state violence at the hands of police and aggressive immigration agents. The illegitimate President's threats should be cause to embolden our city leaders, not an excuse to abandon our potential progress.

Tell Mayor Rahm Emanuel to Defy Trump, Defend Chicago, and Expand Sanctuary
Chicago has a history of over-policing and criminalization, which has led to Chicago residents being killed, incarcerated, and put in deportation proceedings regardless of the police-ICE collaboration. And, under unprecedented attacks against our communities from the federal government, the City of Chicago must also change. In order to keep communities safe, the City of Chicago must protections and relationships with people of color. It is a reality that in our city Black immigrants are disproportionately affected by criminalization and also needs immigration protections that do not exclude people with criminal records. In order to effectively respond to these threats, Cities must both provide undocumented and other non-citizen residents effective protections and safeguards from immigration enforcement, while also reducing the over-policing and criminalization of immigrant communities, Black people, and other people of color, that leads to mass incarceration and deportation. The two demands, to move the recommendations to change the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) contract and amend the Welcoming City Ordinance is being supported by a coalition of local organizations, including Organized Communities Against Deportations, Black Youth Project 100, Arab American Action Network, Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Chicago, Brighton Park Neighborhood Council, Centro de Trabajadores Unidos - Immigrant Worker Project, Chicago Community and Worker’s Rights, Chicago Religious Leadership Network on Latin America, Community Activism Law Alliance, ENLACE Chicago, Hana Center, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Latino Policy Forum, Latino Union of Chicago, Mujeres Latinas en Acción, PASO- West Suburban Action Project, and the Southwest Organizing Project, along with Mijente.

  • Tell Mayor Greg Stanton to Defy Trump & SB1070, Stand with Guadalupe, Create Real Protections
Last night, in front of her own family, Phoenix police helped federal deportation agents deport Lupita García de Rayos. Mayor Stanton made a statement in opposition but needs to put his words into action. Phoenix police are among the most violent in the country and actively profile Black, Latinx, and migrant communities. We are asking Mayor Stanton to put his promise into action starting with putting an end to Operation Order 4.48, a Phoenix PD order that mandates and cements ICE/Police collaboration and that is dripping with racial profiling language. We ask that he lead by example and not be intimidated by Trump nor the racist proposals of the AZ State Legislature currently being considered to increase law enforcement, further criminalize immigrants and punish sanctuary cities. Lupita was deported because Sheriff Arpaio criminalized her in an unconstitutional raid. Many more Phoenix residents will face the same fate unless Mayor Stanton transforms police practice in our city. Mayor Stanton needs to know that we won't let him bend under Trump's pressure and that the people in Phoenix are who he needs to be listening to in order to create real safety in the city. • Harrisonburg
Tell City Council to make Harrisonburg a Sanctuary City!
Donald Trump just announced executive action that threatens any town or city that seeks to protect immigrant residents from the deportation machine. What he’s trying to do is roll back the leaps forward we’ve made in recent years but we won’t let him. In 2017, it’s the efforts to defend Black lives and protect migrant rights that make our cities safer, not Trump’s extra enforcement promises. To keep us safe, we need to evolve our local policies to make our cities real sanctuaries for all residents, not cancel them because of the President's latest actions. In 2016, Harrisonburg City Council passed the “Welcoming America” resolution, signaling its commitment to join a national network of communities that are working together to make it easier for newly arrived immigrants and refugees to adjust to their new life. According to the United States Census, 15.5% of Harrisonburg’s population is foreign-born. The “Welcoming America” resolution aimed to make that transition as easy as possible for those who want to achieve the American Dream. It was founded on the principle that when communities welcome and support newcomers, the community becomes a better place for everyone. Tell our mayor and city council to stand up to Trump and take action that doesn't just symbolically defend immigrants, but transforms our city's policies to stop targeting us for imprisonment, risk of removal, and state violence at the hands of police and aggressive immigration agents. The President's threats should be cause to embolden our city leaders, not an excuse to abandon our potential progress. To keep our community safe, friendly, and welcoming, we need to adopt local policies that make our city a real sanctuary for all residents. This requires a commitment to separating the work of our local police officers from that of federal immigration enforcement, addressing policing practices that criminalize immigrant residents AND funnels Black, LGBTQ, poor people, those with mental illness, and other residents to jail. In 2017, it will be the efforts to protect and defend human rights that will make our cities safer. Tell our mayor and city council that we do not want our community to be divided. Demand that they make Harrisonburg a sanctuary city. • Philadelphia
Tell Mayor Kenney to Defy Trump, Defend Philly & Make Us a Real Sanctuary City
Donald Trump just announced executive action on immigration and has threatened to not just defund cities that have policies that separate police and ICE but to also grow the deportation machine to round up, detain and deport our loved ones everywhere. We have worked hard over the years to build with our community, our city and our elected officials to create a Philadelphia we all want to live in. And it has been the work to defend black lives and to support and defend immigrants rights that will continue to make us stronger, not over policing and enforcement priorities built by Trump's racist ideologies. In the attempt to define ourselves as a city that protects its citizens from racist policies and rhetoric we need to build the actual "Sanctuary City" we all deserve. What does this look like? It means making a commitment to keep our police separate from ICE AND addressing the unjust criminal system that uses black and brown bodies to fill up jails through "broken window" policing policies, like "Stop and Frisk." Please tell Mayor Kenney and our local elected officials to take action to defend all of us at this time, all of the citizens of Philadelphia, regardless of immigration status from the grips of the deportation machine and the unjust criminal system. Trump's dictator style threats should have us showing the rest of the country that we will not sit by and abandon progress, especially not now.
