Thomas Bert Prins: "My statement is I’m not allowed to go to church. I’m not allowed to go into the yard. There are a lot of rights that I don’t get. Unless I wear a uniform that I’m not wearing because they are saying that I’m dangerous based on stuff that I can prove that is not true and there is no mechanism for me to try to get that fixed. I’ve been assaulted by the staff. Got hit in the back of the head by the staff. I’ve blacked out. They said that I pushed the guy and just like that they told me that I will be a super high risk now because of this assault that I supposedly assaulted this guard by pushing them. But he can hit me in the back of my head and black out. I didn’t receive proper medical care for this and just like that. I get punished too. When I went for the punishment for that. I told them I wanted a lawyer to be present. I felt the charges were serious enough. But they refused me to get a lawyer. 

Just like that I got locked into this color code uniform. This is further just how the system is destroying the rights of people inside detention. There isn’t really a way to defend yourself properly. They just shuffle you in a deck and when you try to pull your card out they will say, oh sorry but I don’t represent those rights/interests of yours. You have to talk to this other department DHS system and that will either be healthcare or ICE or GEO. But you actually will never get the chance to talk to anyone who will help you or try to take responsibility for your problems. You are out of the window. You don’t get any rights here. Any help people can give, please give it. I’m hopeful the future can be better than this."
