SUCCESS: LGBT Chamber: Cut Ties With Private Prisons

Update: The LGBT Chamber of Commerce, through the organizing and advocacy of people like you, has decided to divest completely from CoreCivic. Thank you for your support as we fight on!

Nashville LGBT Chamber of Commerce must sever its ties with Core Civic (formerly known as Corrections Corporation of America), a private organization that makes money from incarcerating migrants, refugees, Native Americans, poor people, and People of Color.

Why is this important?

The Nashville LGBT Chamber of Commerce's stated goal is to "advocate and educate on behalf of our individual, small business, corporate, and nonprofit members who share the values of promoting equity and diversity in business and society." Core Civic's policies and business model actively harms LGBT people from many communities which is in direct violation of their stated goal of advocating for LGBT people.

Reasons for signing

  • The organization I work with exchanges around 3,000 letters each year with incarcerated persons, most of whom are trans or queer. LGBTQ+ orgs should never "partner" with any organization involved in or benefiting from the Prison Industrial Complex. It's really unbelievable that we should have to say this when the entity under discussion is as violent and horrible as CoreCivic/CCA.
  • As a minority group I feel we are obliged to work for the fair treatment of others even when it does not affect us personally. We never would have won the rights we have if our straight allies had not fought beside us.
  • It's the right thing to do. With a track record of discrimination & abuse and no signs of trying to change, how can they be a LGBTQ friendly & supportive business. I thought the Chamber was to certify & promote businesses that welcome, support & serve the LGBTQ community so that in return the community know about & support them. Is my understanding of the basis for LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce inaccurate?
