We must do whatever it takes to end the incarceration cycle of women in prison. The incarceration rate of Latina women is experienced nearly at four times the rate of incarceration of white women.

Christy Simental is a mother and grandmother from Phoenix, Arizona and was sentenced to two 25 consecutive sentences in prison. When she was first locked up, her daughter Carol who is now 31 was only 5 years old, if Christy had to serve her full sentence her daughter would be 51 before they could spend time together. Christy has three kids and 9 grandkids. If Board of Clemency members were to grant her clemency, then she will be released on her 25th year in prison which would be February 19, 2019.

In 1994, Christy was separated and forced to learn to live away from her family and has missed out on very special moments in her children’s life. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was attempting to protect her kids in the time of the incident and was unfairly punished by a judge because she wouldn’t testify against her oldest brother and was given two counts of first-degree murder and two for kidnapping. She was given the possibility of 5 years in prison in exchange for snitching out the person who did it, but she refused to engage in that behavior and had to pay a higher price for it.

Why is this important?

Prisons are a waste of human potential and kills the spirit of individuals and families. We have most recently been outraged about family separation by the crisis at the border and the caging of children and their parents. We must acknowledge this crisis within the prison system which has been happening for decades! Christy and her children are victims like millions of others. Motherhood should not live behind bars and if you believe this too you will sign, share and repost this petition.

“I will be going to the board of clemency at the beginning of next year. Join me in the quest for my liberation. I have not only lost 24 years of my children's lives I have lost time with my grandkids as well. This a heartfelt plea from the bottom of my heart from a mother, nana, tia and sister that my story reaches one person willing to be my voice and help me. Thank you.” - Christy Simental

“My mom was locked up when I was 6 years old and now I have kids of my own. Prison has taken away years from our lives and an opportunity to create memories together as a family. We need my mom back and my kids need her nana too.” - Carol, Christy’s Oldest Daughter
