El foro de “Perspectivas Para Colombia,” en el que los candidatos a presidencia por Colombia 2018 estarán presentes, fue organizado con la intención de fomentar la participación cívica de manera informada. A petición del pueblo Colombiano que reside en Nueva York, se logró confirmar la asistencia de los candidatos corriendo a la presidencia este Mayo 27 de 2018. Más sin embargo, a pocos días del evento, se emitió un comunicado en la página del evento diciendo que “el evento será exclusivo para miembros de la comunidad de Columbia University”.
Esta decisión de cerrar el debate al público es un ataque contra el proceso democrático y la cantidad de personas que apoyaron el esfuerzo para organizar el debate en la ciudad Nueva York. El grupo @ColumbiaPorColombia informo que “dado a inconvenientes insuperables por parte de la Universidad” no se dará acceso de la discusión al publico, nosotros demandamos como comunidad Colombiana en NY que este evento sea auspiciado en otra localidad que sea abierta a los que residimos en el extranjero.
Esta petición proviene de comunidades que creemos en la participación cívica y democrática de manera honesta, abierta y pública. Queremos resaltar que esta exclusion de nuestra participación es elitista y clasista la cual privatiza nuestros derechos como ciudadanos.
Why is this important?
The forum “Perspectivas Para Colombia” will be hosting the presidential candidates for 2018 from Colombia with the intention of fomenting informed civic participation. As requested by the Colombian community residing in New York, the forum was confirmed with the attendance of the candidates running for president this May 27, 2018. However, a few days before the event, a statement was issued on the page of the event stating that "The event will be exclusive for members of the Columbia University community" (English translation).
The decision of closing the debate to the public is an attack on the democratic process and the number of people who supported the effort to organize the debate in the city of New York. The group @ColumbiaPorColombia informs that "due to insurmountable inconveniences on the part of the University"(English translation) they are not given access to the discussion to the larger public. As a Colombian community in New York we demand that this event is sponsored at another locality that is indeed open to those who we reside abroad (to the public).
This request comes from communities that truly believe in civic and democratic participation in an honest, open and public manner. We want to highlight that the exclusion of our participation is elitist and classist and it privatizes our rights as citizens.
